Reasons for Establishment

The campus wireless local area network (WLAN) refers to the enterprise WLAN. A WLAN provides a low-cost enterprise wireless network that is easy to build, easy to maintain, and has a good ecosystem of terminals and network equipment. It is widely used in various enterprise LANs. Currently, with the mobility of terminals, the WLAN has become the mainstream technology that is used by enterprises to access the network terminals.

However, the enterprise WLAN has the characteristics of dense access points, complex environments and diverse services. The WLAN technology is based on collision detection and packet sending mechanisms. An enterprise network experience puts forward higher requirements for network performance (such as bandwidth, delay, jitter, etc.), security, energy saving, sensor access, seamless roaming, and service integration.

In the global WLAN industry's division of labor, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) has developed standards for communications between terminals and networks, the Wi-Fi Alliance (WFA) has built a verification platform for interoperability between terminals and networks, and the Wireless Broadband Alliance (WBA) has promoted the deployment in some new industries. However, there are still a lack of standards for industry performance requirements and network acceptance criteria. Although some enterprises or organizations have tried to design several evaluation criteria, for example "Tolly Certified", these evaluation mechanisms lack of standardized basic specifications and scenario-based business descriptions. Therefore, we urgently need to design a set of performance evaluation standards that are unified, complete and based on the actual application experience to fill the gaps in the industry.

Meanwhile, in the enterprise networking, access controllers (ACs) and thin access points (APs) are often used to form a multi-node network. The networking puts forward technical requirements for equipment such as energy saving, seamless roaming, security and reliability. The industry has standards for communication protocol but lacks standards for technical requirements for AP equipment, for example, energy-saving requirements, no standards organizations set the standard for whether equipment that supports both 2.4G and 5G bands is capable of disabling the 5G band and enabling only the 2.4G band. Therefore, it is impossible to form support for the diverse capability requirements of enterprise networking.

The campus WLAN working group is established to formulate performance requirements, technical requirements and acceptance criteria for network and equipment acceptance at the WAA for enterprise networking scenarios in multiple industries.

Standard scope of the WG

Standard scope of the WG

The campus WLAN working group is established to formulate the following requirements at the WAA for enterprise networking scenarios in multiple industries

1. Performance requirements for network and equipment

2. Technical requirements for network and equipment

3. Acceptance criteria for network and equipment.

The working group targets the networking in a variety of industries, including but not limited to general office, medical, education, industry, etc. Separate working groups can also be established for different industry scenarios in due course.
